Out of My Mind manages to do what it clearly set out to do: tell the story of a girl with cerebral palsy with care, making the viewer empathise with her immediately, seeing the world the way she sees it. I just hope something as diverse and inclusive as Out of My Mind will soon become the norm, instead of the exception.

‘Out of My Mind’ threads the needle between Disneyfied plotting and grown-up concerns, as this family friendly movie never forgets that creating a better world for kids with CP is a much bigger and more inclusive project than just convincing their peers not to bully them… will make parents sob uncontrollably… The lessons here may go down easy, but “Out of My Mind” knows better than to resolve the lifelong tug-of-war between what’s possible for Melody and what isn’t. Instead, it simply suggests that she has more to say than most people have learned how to hear, which is almost their loss as much as it is her own.

Out of my Mind never forgets that life with cerebral palsy is a life of crushes, academic successes, fun costumes, and star gazing. This isn’t an exercise in bleakness… that kind of commitment to reality is worth celebrating.

Amber Sealey’s direction transforms Sharon M. Draper’s novel into a cinematic experience that feels both intimate and grand. Her most daring decision is to remain unwaveringly committed to Melody’s point of view; we are not just watching her story but also experiencing her world...Sealey strikes a delicate balance between pain and hope with astonishing accuracy. Disability depiction in ‘Out of My Mind’ is more than just a story decision; it’s a revolutionary declaration.
